What’s Smokin?

Let’s talk about cigarette smoke odor removal. There are some old fashioned ways such as a lit candle in the room where there are cigarette smokers. This may eliminate some of the odor but not all of it. After the smokers are gone the memory lingers on in the form of stale cigarette smoke and stained mirrors, furniture, etc. . . . Nothing smells worse than that stale tobacco odor.

The cigarette odor stale or fresh is a problem if you have someone in the household that has allergies. I cannot think of anything that can trigger an allergic reaction faster than cigarette smoke. The best cigarette smoke odor removal is to not let the guests or family smoker smoke their cigarettes in the house. Remove them to the porch, front lawn or garage anywhere but in the house. Besides hurting the family member that is allergic to the smoke you should see what it does to your house. Mirrors have a yellow film on them which is hard to clean with regular glass cleaner. Drapes and furniture absorb the smell and the yellow film needing professional cleaning help. But most of all the family members have the dubious honor of inhaling second hand smoke. If you have a smoker in the house check out the fur on your pet cat or dog. You will see that it feels greasy and has a yellow cast also. The pet will also have a stale cigarette odor smell.

The best cigarette smoke odor removal is less expensive than the ozone generators that don’t work, and can be used in the regular course of cleaning the house. That is OdorZout All Surface Granules. Sprinkled on your carpet or floors and vacuumed up every 24 hours, they will eliminate the cigarette smoke odor completely. If the odor is heavier than normal it may take about a full week of applications, but it does work. These granules can be used on the furniture as well. There is no need for expensive machinery or redecorating your rooms to eliminate the cigarette smoke odor. Let the OdorZout All Surface Granules work their magic for you.

In answer to that question “not me.” Moth ball odor removal is not easy but then what odor is easy to remove. The best way to kill a moth is with one moth ball, a hearty sling shot and an accurate eye. We have always been told, at least I have, that you needed moth balls to kill the moths that ate your woolens. This is a myth since the moth does not have a mouth with which to chew. Like some butterflies, to which the moth is related, they have a long sipper through which they sip their meals. The holes in your prized woolens are made by the larvae of the moth named Tineidae. The odor from the moth balls kills the larvae and does a good job on our olfactory senses too.

As an aside, I would like to share my quick moth story; I am unable to swat and kill anything bigger than a fruit fly. One day a good size moth got into my living room and neither my son nor I could swat at it while it flew madly around the room. I remembered that moths are drawn to light. We shut all the lights in the house and lit a candle. We walked slowly to the balcony with only the candle light. The moth followed us all the way out. I was relieved and surprised to see how well that worked.

There are many methods of moth ball odor removal. Many of them include the use of charcoal briquettes, fennel seed, fabreze, ammonia, baking soda and coffee grounds. How are these items used? Let’s assume that the odor of moth balls is in a chest of drawers. The charcoal briquettes can be placed on paper in the chest of drawers to absorb the smell. Many people believe that charcoal absorbs odors. The same method applies to fennel seed. Another method is the use of Fabreze which is a scented spray that can be sprayed on tissue or fabric and placed into the chest of drawers. It has been suggested that a Fabreze sheet can be put into closed luggage to absorb the smell. The same system of moth ball odor removal applies to ammonia, baking soda and coffee grounds although individually and not mixed together.

When it comes to moth ball odor removal from clothing the old stand by is always suggested. Place the clothing into a dryer with scented dryer sheets and set the dryer to a non heating setting and air dry Another method, if you do not care to use the dryer, is to hang the clothing outside on a cool windy day. Do not hang in the sun. The general consensus of opinion being that eventually the moth ball odor will dissipate on its own.

If all else fails or you don’t want to play around with the “maybe it will work” system then for assured moth ball odor removal use OdorZout All Surface odor remover. It works.

Many of us have been fascinated by leather since childhood after seeing all of those cowboy serial movies. Cowboys and leather are synonymous whether the old time cowboys or the modern day cowboys. After all, there is nothing more masculine or, feminine for that matter, than leather. I personally love the stuff and especially the smell of new leather. Depending of course, on what type of leather it is. However, like everything else we use and wear eventually it will lose its nice smell and begin to stink and a good leather odor remover is necessary.

There are many types of leather: Buckskin is a suede-like leather; patent leather is a high gloss leather and usually has a plastic finish; Vachetta which is usually used to trim luggage and handbags (used in Louis Vutton products); Slink made from the skin of unborn calves used in making gloves, and Deerskin one of the toughest leathers; as well as ostrich and kangaroo the newer leathers. These are the ones that I know of and I am sure there are more. All of these and other leathers eventually become inundated with body odors and household odors with natural and normal use. All odors are caused by certain odor producing bacteria, each one indigenous to its own environment i.e. body odor bacteria would be different from bacteria causing urine odor, etc. Let’s talk about either making or purchasing a leather odor remover.

To remove the odor caused by urine from leather upholstery, use one teaspoon of mild dish detergent (not the kind you use in the dishwasher) to a quart of warm water. Whip this up until it’s foamy and with a clean sponge wipe the upholstery using only the foam. Do not soak the upholstery and use a soft clean towel to immediately wipe it up. Follow this up with clean water and another clean sponge wiping the upholstery of all of the detergent and again immediately wiping it dry.

Body odors from clothing, head grease, oil and sweat can really make for a smelly piece of leather. This can happen predominantly in leather clothing. To eliminate this odor a good leather odor remover is your dryer. Place the leather item in the dryer together with about three or four dryer sheets of your choice and about three tennis balls. Turn the dryer on to a very low setting without heat. Let this run for about twenty or twenty five minutes and the odor should be gone.

I would also recommend the use of OdorZout All Purpose Granule odor remover as a leather odor remover. . If used according to instructions, to just sprinkle the granules where needed and let them sit for a few minutes, they will work their magic. Be sure to read and follow the instructions.

As a little aside, I learned that there is a beetle living in Upshur County, West Virginia that has the odor of leather. Stephen Crosswell, a photographer that photographed the beetle said the books state this beetle is reddish or reddish brown although he says the one he photographed was definitely black. Interesting!

Someone Upchucked

I want to address the issue of vomit odor removal because each of us, in our lifetime, will have to deal at least once with vomit. Most probably if we have children, adults with sensitive stomachs and pets. Children vomit easily from overeating, eating the wrong thing and illness. Adults with sensitive stomachs will vomit if they drink too much, overeat, or eat something their sensitive stomach cannot tolerate or, illness. On the other hand, pets, especially cats, will bring up hairballs.

Vomit odor removal is easy if you follow the steps I outline for you. I’ve done it many times and feel I could open a business for this job alone. To begin with let’s look at human vomit. If the vomit is on a fabric, such as bed linens, take the linens, rinse the vomit off and place the linens in your washing machine adding an odor removing additive such as OdorZout for laundry and launder the linens. Dealing with vomit on hardwood or tile floors and on carpets is a little more difficult.

If the vomit is on the carpet, cover it completely and thickly with a cat litter to absorb the liquid and to clump the solids. When it is all absorbed you can pick it up fairly easily. Wearing a pair of latex gloves, to avoid getting any of it on your skin, take two pieces of heavy cardboard preferably from a box and make two scoops. Using these two scoops, one to hold the materials you are scooping and the other to use as a shovel push the materials onto the first scoop. Don’t use an actual shovel it will take you too far from the area you need to clean and will cause you to dig into the rug. By using the two scoop method what you are doing is scooping and lifting. Have a bag with a plastic lining (plastic grocery bag will do) to use as a receptacle into which you will throw what you have scooped up. After you’ve cleaned all of the absorbed vomit off the carpet use paper towels to absorb any liquid that may remain. Make a mild solution of detergent and warm water and wash the area until it is visibly clean. Blot the washed wet spot with paper towels. This will clean the area but the odor of vomit will remain.

When the area you have cleaned and washed is thoroughly dry you may use a vomit odor removal product such as OdorZout for carpets, wood and tile floors. This granule may be applied once the carpet is thoroughly dry. Instructions on the container warn against using this on a wet area of carpet as it may cause discoloration. However, it works its magic on a thoroughly dry area.

Kitty’s upchucked hairballs are a lot easier to clean but they too can retain an odor and cause a soiled spot on the rug. To clean such a mess use a paper towel to pick up the hairball carefully. Do not press down to avoid making a stain on the rug. Using a paper towel absorb any liquid that may remain. Witha soft sponge mop and a good stain remover clean the area. I use Oxy Solution which can be purchased in any fully stocked pet store.

Hopefully, these hints for vomit odor removal will brace you for these messy moments.

Do It Yourself

Do It Yourself

Do it yourself is good if you are baking a cake but not if you are trying to remove odors. There are many odor remover recipes and some of them work temporarily. But, if you are looking for a fresh clean smelling house you cannot beat the professional or the use of a good, reliable odor remover product such as OdorZout granules. Just sprinkle, let stand for a while and vacuum or sweep up and voila the odors are gone. However, I still maintain that for the best cleaning and mite removal is the professional carpet cleaner. Using OdorZout granules in between professional cleaning will keep your house odor free all of the time.

Let’s look at some of the self cleaning odor remover recipes. When I say self cleaning I don’t mean they will do the cleaning without you. Oh no, they need your elbow grease to make them work. Let’s look at a few Odor remover recipes you may want to try.

To remove urine stains from leather you will need a mild dish detergent, water, a spray bottle and a new sponge. Remove the pillow stuffing. Mix one teaspoon of the mild dish detergent with the water until it’s very sudsy. Soak the sponge in this solution and using only the suds clean the pillow being careful not to wet the leather pillow too much. This is supposed to clean and deodorize the leather.

Did you know that if you have mold in your home you can clean it yourself but first you have to determine what kind of mold it is. An easy chore it you are a chemist. When cleaning mold be sure you wear rubber gloves and a mask and close the room you are working in tightly. Why? Because the spores of the mold will be disturbed and will start flying around the room. You don’t want them to get out and you don’t want to breathe them in either. One solution in cleaning mold is to use 2 teaspoons of Tea Tree Treasure with two cups of water and spray the area and let it stand. A great solution if you know what Tea Tree Treasure is. Another solution is 20 drops of citrus seed and water in a spray bottle and again spray the area and let it stand. If you don’t like to use chemicals then use a dry vapor steam cleaner . Most molds are sensitive to heat and will die from the steam. One more solution is to fill your spray bottle with white vinegar and spray the area. This should eliminate the mold. But then how to get rid of the vinegar smell is another problem.

The best way to eliminate mold is to get a professional to do it for you. A professional will do a quick and safe job in making your home clean of deadly mold. They remove the mold and do not leave any odors from the removal around to annoy you. This would be my suggestion unless you enjoy prancing around a tightly locked room looking like an extra terrestrial.

Carpet Odor Remover

Carpet Odor Remover

Carpets pick up all of the odors in the house. Everything from cooking odors to pet odors to human odors all end up in the carpet and especially in wall-to-wall carpeting. There was a time when carpet odor removal was done the hard way. There were no wall-to-wall carpets then and the carpet that was in the living room or dining room was gathered up once every three months regardless of whether it was hot or cold out. The carpet was placed on a heavy clothes line and beaten with a special rug beater tool. The tool was made of a heavy wire and looked something like a tennis racket only with large petal shaped body instead of the string. It was usually the job of the man of the house to beat the rugs because the beating needed strength behind it. Then it hung there until evening and returned to the house smelling clean and fresh. There is no way you can do that today with wall-to-wall carpeting. Now we need a strong carpet odor remover to take out the various odors that live in that carpet along with the mites that have also taken up residency there.

There are many carpet cleaners on the market that claim to remove the dirt and the odor but they do not do a very good job. There are carpet cleaning companies that come out and claim that their products have the best carpet odor remover. Their claim depends entirely on how dirty the carpet is and how strong their carpet odor remover is.

Spot washing your carpet frequently with a good cleaning solution can help to keep your carpet odor free for a while. At least until you have a professional clean it thoroughly. Letting the professional know if you have a pet and there may be urine in the carpet will help him to use the proper carpet odor remover product. If you want a clean and fresh carpet don’t let his job be a guessing game.

Many people clean their own carpets by renting the equipment with which to do the job. This takes a lot of muscle and costs a lot of money. A professional carpet odor remover may cost a few dollars more but will not give you the added expense of a doctor’s visit. Going back in time again, housewives would scrub the carpets like they did the floors, in between carpet beatings, with a detergent and water and a scrub brush. The soap that was used was called Fels Naphtha and when the job was done the whole room smelled clean and fresh but again, it did not last long.

Today we have an excellent carpet odor remover in OdorZout granules. Sprinkle, let stand for a while and vacuum and the odor is gone and the house is fresh and clean. Wonderful to use in between professional cleaning to remove the dirt and mites. Use OdorZout granules as a carpet odor remover for cleanliness and freshness.

Don’t you hate getting into an elevator or standing in line next to a smelly person? The truth is, people bathe and wash their clothes and still they smell funky. Everyone has body odor caused by perspiration, foods we eat, where we are employed and from other smells around us. If you smoke or drink, this can make the problem worse. Trying to cover up odors with perfumes and deodorants smell nice at first but can add to the problem as the day progresses.  Laundry detergents try to cover up odors with chemicals. They do a good job of getting out dirt but they do nothing to neutralize the body odor.

If you are one of the few people that suffer from severe body odor be assured this can be dealt with. Doctors have been known to prescribe charcoal tablets to help stop some of the heavy and more severe body odors. In addition, you can chew on parsley after meals and throughout the day. Parsley helps to keep body odor in check as well. Parsley contains chlorophyll which is the mineral that neutralizes internal body odor that are caused by what we eat and drink.

At the end of the day you put your dirty clothes into the laundry hamper (or in a heap on your closet floor) because you know they do not smell very good because of body odor. Well, those clothes did not stop smelling because you stopped wearing them. Odor is caused by bacteria and bacteria will continue to multiply while the clothes are waiting to be washed.

Let me take a moment to tell you about a mineral called Zeolite that actually neutralizes body odor and is friendly to the environment. Zeolite can be used to launder your clothes and can be sprinkled in your hamper to neutralize the odor of the dirty clothes in that hamper. It helps to keep the closet as well as your bedroom odor free thus smelling good.. Zeolite looks like a white sand and works on your clothes the way the parsley I mentioned works on the body odor that is caused internally. It takes advantage of a neutral mineral substance to actually get rid of odors not just cover them up. Zeolite is often used commercially as a component in water softeners and is perfectly safe for use in your washing machine and its non toxic. Where can you get this miracle powder? A laundry odor remover called OdorZOut contains Zeolite. Just one or two teaspoons of OdorZOut in an average load of laundry can work magic in body odor removal. If my calculations are correct that would be less than ten cents per load.

I know this sounds like science fiction but the Zeolite crystals in OdorZOut actually trap the gasses that cause the odor. Back in nature the gaseous odors are released when Zeolite is exposed to the sun. The natural cycle is complete. Check out OdorZOut . It’s really good stuff.   .

The reference is to mold and mildew. Most people to do not realize that mold and mildew are alive and grow by setting their spores airbourn and wherever they land they attach themselves to that article and begin to grow. Mildew is a fungus and thrives in warm humid areas such as the kitchen laundry room and bathroom. Basements are also vulnerable to the growth of fungus because they usually are warm and humid from the laundry room. The basement walls are also the ideal place for mildew to grow because of the dampness which is caused by condensation of warm and moist air which can be found on the cooler inside walls and floors. To eliminate the source for mildew to grow on the use of a dehumidifier in the basement is highly recommended. The use of fans in the kitchen and bathroom is also good for eliminating the growth of mildew. Mildew is not only a problem because it grows on objects in your home but it has a musty odor and needs mildew odor removal.

If there is an accumulation of mildew on a wall or floor the best natural way to clean it is to spray the area with white vinegar and do not water it down just use it straight out of the bottle. This cleaning solution will clean the mildew but will cause a vinegar odor to remain behind. The vinegar odor can be dealt with but now we are most interested in removing the mildew and in mildew odor removal. While cleaning the area be sure to cover you nose and mouth The spores will become active as they try to find another place to settle and you will breathe them in.

Mildew will adhere itself not only to the concrete walls and floors in the basement but will grow on furniture, walls and floors or any room in the house that has warmth and moisture. If you are in a warm climate and live near a body of water you know how quickly the mildew will grow and spread. It is important to keep these areas as dry and as clean as possible to deter the growth of mildew. Once all of the mildew has been removed the drying and cleaning should be done as an ongoing process to avoid its return.

Once you have removed all of the mildew you will have to contend with the musty odor it left behind. The process of mildew odor removal is not a difficult process but it too is ongoing. Fresh air circulating in the affected area is one way of removing the musty odor. Keeping the area dry with the use of an electric fan will also help to eliminate the musty odor left behind by mildew. When cleaning the area you want to use OdorZout all purpose granules for a perfect cleaning solution and the perfect mildew odor removal. Keeping the area dry, well ventilated and clean is the answer to removing mildew and its musty odor.

All of these recent and future disasters, some natural-some human enabled ie; floods, tornados, hurricanes, microbursts, earthquakes, power outages, etc…have horrendus consequences for all people involved.  No one can predict when and where these disasters will strike, and certainly, nobody wants to be in the path of nature’s rath.

One of the common threads involving cleanup is to rid the area of disaster of foul odor.  There may be many problems removing the odors as there may be non-specific sources of odors.  Zeolite minerals are one SAFE and NATURAL way to remove such odors.  Although they do NOT disinfect, they DO remove the odors.

One easily accessible and economical product MADE IN THE USA is OdorZout All Surface Granules.  Check out www.88stink.com .  Under various labels of OdorZout Household/Dog or Cat All Surface Granules depending on where you buy them, they are easy to use and are ALL NATURAL.

Zeolite minerals have been used for centuries in other areas of the world, and are just now catching on in the US.  The easiest thing for these minerals to do is to absorb odors.  It’s just what they do NATURALLY.  There is nothing added to the zeolites to make them work.

It’s so easy, it’s almost too good to be true.  Open the bottle, sprinkle lightly in the area affected, leave 24 hours, vacuum or sweep up if indoors, just leave it down if it’s used outdoors.  Repeat every 24 hours until the odor is gone.

OdorZout products parent company, No Stink Inc, is one of the few companies that activates the zeolites before packaging.  In nature, the zeolites used have 30% moisture, No Stink Inc products are dried to less than 3% so it can absorb moisture as well as odor.

Since the product is ALL NATURAL, it is 100% safe for pets and people too.  It is the ONLY ALL NATURAL ODOR REMOVER with the new EPA/dfe seal of approval for a safer environment.  (dfe stands for Design for the Environment).

Having been in business for almost 15 years, No Stink Inc, was “green” before there was talk of being green.  It started as a family run business out of necessity of being animal addicts, and having a need for a SAFE product for all kinds of pets.

OdorZout does not work immediately as it takes time for the granules to absorb the stench.  The worse the stink, the longer it will take to work.  But have faith, once the odor is gone, it’s gone completely. The granules work like a sponge, once they are full of odor, they’re done, which is the reason to repeat the process until there is no odor left.

The All Surface Granules are perfect to remove the foul odor, the stink, the stench, the smell, from refrigerators and freezers,  that have been off for hours or days with food inside.  It can even be used inside the coolers that are holding the food until you can get them back into the frig or freezer.

It will work on flooring and carpeting that has been water damaged.  It can be used safely on upholstery in automobiles that are water damaged, as well as household furniture.

It can be used on any surface indoors or out where there is an odor and is SAFE to leave down with pets and people.
